Using nondeterministic learners to alert on coffee rust disease

چکیده
Motivated by an agriculture case study, we discuss how to learn functions able to predict whether the value of a continuous target variable will be greater than a given threshold. In the application studied, the aim was to alert on high incidences of coffee rust, the main coffee crop disease in the world. The objective is to use chemical prevention of the disease only when necessary in order to obtain healthier quality products and reductions in costs and environmental impact. In this context, the costs of misclassifications are not symmetrical: false negative predictions may lead to the loss of coffee crops. The baseline approach for this problem is to learn a regressor from the variables that records the factors affecting the appearance and growth of the disease. However, the number of errors is too high to obtain a reliable alarm system. The approaches explored here try to learn hypotheses whose predictions are allowed to return intervals rather than single points. Thus, in addition to alarms and non-alarms, these predictors identify situations with uncertain classification, which we call warnings. We present three different implementations: one based on regression, and two more based on classifiers. These methods are compared using a framework where the costs of false negatives are higher than that of false positives, and both are higher than the cost of warning predictions. 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Infection model for analyzing biological control of coffee rust using bacterial anti-fungal compounds
Coffee rust is one of the main diseases that affect coffee plantations worldwide [6]. This causes an important economic impact in the coffee production industry in countries where coffee is an important part of the economy. A common method for combating this disease is through the use of copper hydroxide as a fungicide, which can have damaging effects both on the coffee tree and on human health...

In this paper we present a mode that incorporates two levels of dynamic structuring of the coffee rust disease (caused by the rust fungus, Hemileia vastatrix). First, two distinct spatial scales of transmission dynamics are interrogated with respect to the resultant structure of catastrophic transitions BLOCKIN BLOCKIN of BLOCKIN BLOCKIN epidemics. BLOCKIN BLOCKIN BLOCKIN BLOCKIN Second BLOCKIN...
متن کاملLandscape context and scale differentially impact coffee leaf rust, coffee berry borer, and coffee root-knot nematodes.
Crop pest and disease incidences at plot scale vary as a result of landscape effects. Two main effects can be distinguished. First, landscape context provides habitats of variable quality for pests, pathogens, and beneficial and vector organisms. Second, the movements of these organisms are dependent on the connectivity status of the landscape. Most of the studies focus on indirect effects of l...

The interaction of crop pests with their natural enemies is a fundament to their control. Natural enemies of fungal pathogens of crops are poorly known relative to those of insect pests, despite the diversity of fungal pathogens and their economic importance. Currently, many regions across Latin America are experiencing unprecedented epidemics of coffee rust (Hemileia vastatrix). Identification...
متن کاملInfluence of Environmental Conditions and Genetic Background of Arabica Coffee (C. arabica L) on Leaf Rust (Hemileia vastatrix) Pathogenesis
Global warming is a major threat to agriculture worldwide. Between 2008 and 2013, some coffee producing countries in South and Central America suffered from severe epidemics of coffee leaf rust (CLR), resulting in high economic losses with social implications for coffee growers. The climatic events not only favored the development of the pathogen but also affected the physiological status of th...
